  74. This package contains MIDIART 3.00 for Windows, by AJF Consulting, Inc.
  75. MIDIART is a software package that is capable of playing standard MIDI
  76. music files and simultaneuosly creating beautiful psychedelic images
  77. synchronized to the music.  The music recorded in the MIDI file is
  78. responsible for creating the images in real time.  You can interact
  79. with MIDIART to control both the music and the images that are created.
  80.  
  81. In order to use MIDIART on your computer you must have the following:
  82.  
  83.    -  The Microsoft Windows operating system, version 3.1.
  84.    -  A PC sound card OR an external MIDI sound generator connected
  85.       to a MIDI interface card.
  86.    -  A sound card or an interface card device driver correctly
  87.       installed under Windows 3.1.
  88.    -  A 386 or 486 PC.  (An accelerated graphics video card is
  89.       required for 386 models.)

  91. MIDIART is a program that is highly CPU intensive.  Graphic objects
  92. are created and destroyed in sync with individual musical notes which
  93. can have very short durations. (A few milliseconds.)  Therefore,
  94. MIDIART will perform better when running on a faster computer.
  95. A 486DX PC running at 50 Mhz or higher with an accelerated graphics
  96. video card is highly recommended.  On a slower machine, MIDIART may
  97. not be able to create images that stay in sync with the music.

  99. Another thing to keep in mind is that MIDIART uses MIDI (.MID) files
  100. to play music and not WAVE (.WAV) files.  This means that the sound
  101. MIDIART produces depends of the MIDI capabilities of the sound card
  102. you are using.  If you have a newer Wave Table based sound card,
  103. MIDIART should sound great.  If not, MIDIART will sound OK but you
  104. will be missing a great deal of sonic realism that you can only
  105. get from the newer sound cards now on the market.

  107. This document contains only a brief description of MIDIART and its
  108. features, along with instructions for its installation.  Quite detailed
  109. documentation is included in the package, but it is in archived form, and
  110. is more easily read after installation.  (See installation section.)
  111.  
  112. MIDIART is being distributed as shareware.  This form of software
  113. distribution allows you to try out the software for thirty days free of
  114. charge.  If you find this program interesting and fun, and find that you
  115. are using MIDIART after the thirty day period, you must register the
  116. software for a small fee.  Any fee you may have paid to others (disk
  117. vendors, dealers, etc.) to obtain this evaluation version was a fee for
  118. their copying and distribution services, rather than a payment for
  119. continued use of the program.

  122. be eligible for future software upgrades.  If you do not register, you

  160. ===== Installation =====================================

  162. To install this version of MIDIART, you must first unzip or copy all the
  163. files in the package into a single directory.  You will then need to run
  164. the SETUP.EXE program located in this directory.  You must run this
  165. program under Microsoft Windows.  This program will check to insure all
  166. the necessary files are present in the package, and will create a MIDIART
  167. Program Manager group containing both program and help file icons.  (Be
  168. aware that you must run this setup program before you can correctly run
  169. MIDIART.)

  171. To run the setup program, select (File) and (Run) from the Windows
  172. Program Manager main menu.  Then type "\XXX\SETUP.EXE" in the command
  173. line edit box.  "XXX" should be the name of the directory that contains
  174. the files you previously unzipped or copied.  The setup program allows
  175. you to specify the name of the directory in which you want the MIDIART
  176. program files to be placed.  Enter a drive and directory name or use the
  177. directory name recommended by the program.  After you click the OK
  178. button, several files will be copied to the install directory and a new
  179. Program Manager group will be created for the MIDIART program and its
  180. help files.

  182. After you run the setup program as described above, you should read
  183. through the MIDIART Windows help file.  This help file contains basic
  184. information about MIDI, for those who are unfamiliar with MIDI concepts
  185. and terminology.  It also explains how to use MIDIART and how to create
  186. your own MIDIART performances.  MIDIART has several features you may
  187. not become aware of until you read through this documentation.

  189. After you learn to use MIDIART, you will want to do the following:
  190.  
  191.    -  Order a registered version of MIDIART.  The shareware version of
  192.       MIDIART will only allow you to play the four MIDI files that come
  193.       bundled with this version.  The registered version will allow
  194.       you to play any standard MIDI file, and comes with additional
  195.       enhancements.  (See the REGISTER.TXT file.)

  197.    -  Obtain more standard MIDI files.  Standard MIDI files can be found
  198.       on BBS systems, online services such as CompuServe or America
  199.       Online, and the Internet via FTP sites.  MIDIART should be able
  200.       to correctly play any standard MIDI file that conforms to the
  201.       General MIDI standard.  Currently, both the shareware and
  202.       registered versions of MIDIART do not come bundled with MIDI
  203.       files, so as not to infringe on the copyrights of the authors
  204.       of this material.
